This Queenslander holds beautiful memories for me - a home built perfectly for Queensland's climate. Even without air conditioning, the breeze flowed freely through every room, keeping us cool through humid summers. I remember the feeling of walking barefoot across real wooden floorboards, their smooth surface worn by years of footsteps before mine. The real fireplace crackled on cooler nights, and the windows—without screens—opened us completely to the open air, immersing us in nature's presence. Those unscreened windows were wonderful at times and challenging at others, especially when insects found their way inside during summer evenings. But the most beautiful thing about this home was the nature that surrounded it. A majestic Jacaranda tree painted the yard purple in spring, while bottlebrush trees attracted flocks of chattering rainbow lorikeets. The distinctive laugh of kookaburras echoed through the mornings, and palm trees swayed in the Queensland breeze. I encountered snakes sunning themselves in the garden, bright green tree frogs clinging to the walls after rain, and even kangaroos and rabbits that would occasionally visit our yard. This Queenslander wasn't just a house - it was a sanctuary where memories grew as abundantly as the nature that embraced it.
